Between 1978 and 1981, Bimota produced racing machines equipped with Yamaha TZ 250 engines, fitted to the YB1 and YB2, and a TZ 350 engine, exclusively for the YB3. (Only 17 YB3s were produced.)

Of the Bimota YB3s built, a dozen were reserved for official Bimota riders: Jon Ekerold, Randy Mamola, Eric Saul, Patrick Fernandez, and Michel Rougerie.
Patrick Fernandez earned the title of 350cc World Championship runner-up in 1979.
In 1980, Jon Ekerold became the 350cc World Champion rider, securing the manufacturer’s title for Bimota.

Meanwhile, a few YB3s were distributed to select importers in the Netherlands, Australia, Austria, Belgium, and France (for Michel Rougerie).

The YB3 is the latest evolution of the Bimota GP. Its engine, derived from the Yamaha TZ 350, has been reworked by engineer Giotta Bizzarini: 80 hp at 10,000 rpm, a flat-six engine, and 38 mm carburetors.

The chassis bears the signature of Massimo Tamburini, founder of Bimota.

He focused all his efforts on weight reduction: the complete motorcycle weighs only 98 kg, and its frame a mere 6 kg!

Every detail of this motorcycle has been designed for competition, to offer maximum efficiency and absolute precision. All the components are state-of-the-art for their time: the double-cradle frame is made of pressurized chromoly Columbus tubing, the wheels are Campagnolo magnesium, the brakes are Brembo OR series, the fork is a Marzocchi Grand Prix, the cantilever rear suspension is aluminum, the fairing is ultra-lightweight, etc.
