In 1980, Yamaha produced a customer racing motorcycle accessible to all.
This model (TZ 500) was derived from the famous factory machine (OW45) of 1978/79/80, a three-time 500cc world champion with Kenny Roberts.
The TZ 500 (privateer bike) was produced from 1980 to 1982. Models were designated G for 1980, H for 1981, and J for 1982.
The 1982 J model was produced in very limited numbers (30 worldwide) and was equipped with reverse cylinders, like the factory bikes.
The model presented here is a 1980 G model, therefore Yamaha’s first 500cc customer racing motorcycle. Following in the footsteps of Kenny Roberts’ championship titles, this model received the latest Yamaha technology of the time.
- Two-stroke, four-cylinder in-line engine.
- Cantilever suspension.
- Yamaha Power Valve System (YPVS).
