This Honda NS 500 (the denomination NS corresponds to the official works models in contrary to the RS models that are privateer bikes) was part of the official Honda team participating in the 1985 500 World Championship. In 1985 two official Honda Teams participated: The HRC with its sole rider “Freddy Spencer” racing in the 250 and 500cc category, the 500 NSR was the very first version of the V4. Spencer won the world Championship in both categories that year.
The second official team was “Honda Britain” engaging 4 riders racing the NS 500 3 cylinders.
The riders were:
* Wayne Gardner (Australia)
* Randy Mamola (USA)
* Ron Haslam (Great Britain)
* Takazumi Katayama (Japan)
The bikes were in “Rothmans” livery, their sponsor. Three of the « Honda Britain » racers finished 4th, 5th, 6th place. Wayne Gardner was the most successful with the 4th place.
The particularities of the NS (works bike) compared to the RS (privateer) are the following:
* The frame uses a system of Azote introduction in order to verify the weld seams (also used on the works Bimotas as well as on the chassis of the Porsche 917 that participated in the 24 hours of Le Mans).
* The exhaust valve system (ATAC System) comprises an ATAC on each cylinder, 3 ATAC in total (whereas only two for the RS 500 privateers).
* Magnesium carburettors (repainted aluminium ones for the RS)
* Three part magnesium wheels 18” in the back and 16” in the front.
* Fork front-arm in magnesium (Aluminium for the RS)
* Rear silencers (seat) round (oval for the RS).
This bike was entirely restored. The engine is complete, but the restarting work hasn’t been done due to the magnesium parts, such as the lower fork and several engine parts. The magnesium doesn’t age well and the parts are not available, therefore it’s difficult to make the bike run. That should be feasible, but would request a complete dismantling and a special preparation which hasn’t been done yet in this particular case.
This exceptional Honda NS500 R formerly driven by Wayne Gardner is immediately available in France. |
