Less than 20 examples of the works Bimota YB3 were ever produced by the factory.
This extremely efficient machine is perfect to participate in the ICGP championship and achieve excellent results.
The organiser Eric Saul knows the Bimota very well, since he’s raced in the official team winning GPs with a YB3.
The here presented bike was entirely restored in France in 2006. (The engine by the famous Jacky Germain, preparatory for Yamahas of Christian Sarron, and the bike by Kerlo Classic.).
It has only been used twice since in classic events in Europe and is thus in exceptional mechanic and overall condition.
The bike is now available in France (Paris) with a supplementary complete covering (tank, saddle, faring) and a pair of wheels equipped with Dunlop racing tires.
A history file (pictures and information) is available with the bike.
The Italian Bimota factory produced race bikes equipped with Yamaha TZ 250 and 350 engines from 1978 to 1981.
The YB1 and YB2 models were either equipped with the TZ 250 or the 350, the YB3 with 350 engines only.
A dozen were reserved for official Bimota racers (Ekerold, Mamola, Saul, Fernandez, Rougerie). In 1979 Patrick Fernandez became 350 Vice Champion on a works Bimota YB3 and in 1980 John Hekerold won the 350 Championship (driver and constructor) on a works Bimota YB3.
Few YB3 were distributed by priviledged importers (The Netherlands, Australia, Austria, Belgium).
The here presented bike was imported in 1978 by the Belgian Bimota importer for the racer Jean Marc Toffolo.
Bimota’s vocation at that time was to built GP bikes. The final evolution of this type was the YB3 equipped with the Yamaha TZ 350 cc engine. This engine was developed by the engineer Giotta Bizzarini (80 HP at 10,000 rpm, 6 transfert cylinders and 38 mm power jet carburettors).
The design of the bike was signed by Mr. Tamburini, owner of Bimota and inventor of many projects who focused on a very low weight (bike 98 kg, frame 6kg). Every detail of this bike is well thought for the race and offers undoubtable efficiency and absolute precision.
The entire components reflect the must-have of that time (Campagnolo magnesium wheels, Brembo brakes OR series, Marzocchi GP fork, Columbus twin cradle tube frame in nitrogen-pressurized chrome-molybdenum). This technology allows identifying pressure loss due to the slightest fissure immediately.
This system was also used by Honda in 1985 on their NS 500 three cylinder works bikes of Wayne Gardner and Randy Mamola. (Mamola was official Bimota racer in 78/79 as well). Aluminium Cantilever type shocks with louvers.
Extremely light profiled faring, etc. |
